in our recent series of blogs, we have explored the five different municipalities of Ibiza, from the beautiful beaches of San Joan to the bustling capital of Ibiza Town and more, however, we feel that, although not officially a municipality, the thriving and picturesque town of Santa Gertrudis deserves its own special mention.. as it has so much to offer, from delicious dining destinations to beautiful boutiques and so much more..
Here are a few of our most favourite things about Santa Gertrudis. Known officially as Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, due to its abundance of farming land which has produced some of the finest, locally grown fruit and vegetables to be found on the island for centuries, the idyllic town is situated in the very heart of the island, and its central point is undoubtedly the ancient whitewashed church, a historic building in a town steeped in tradition. Stroll through the main square and pay a visit to this most beautiful church, a marvel of traditional architecture.
The town attracts a very international, and mixed crowd, from the bohemian artists who flocked here in the sixties to enjoy the free and easy spirit of the town, and more recently, international families, many of whom choose to see Ibiza real estate in this areas because of the excellent private school, Morna Valley College, which has a reputation for being the very best on the island.
So, where to go if you are in need of refreshment? This is one thing you will have no trouble with in Santa Gertrudis. From the ingenious raw food dishes at Wild Beets, to the traditional jamon serrano served at Bar Costa, an Ibiza institution, there is something to suit every palate. We adore Macao Cafe, don´t be fooled by the name, this is a most stylish and elegant restaurant, which has been serving fine Italian cuisine to locals and holidaymakers alike for decades, and often attracts celebrity guests.
If you wish to indulge in some retail therapy then head to Sluiz, the renowned homeware and clothing store which sells some of the most unique, colourful and quirky soft furnishings, furniture and decorations, a one stop shop should you need to furnish your Ibiza villa in true style. Or head to Galeria Elefante, which stocks a wonderfully bohemian and elegant selection of clothing, artwork, accessories and everything else you can think of.
The Ibiza real estate in the area is very varied, ranging from remote traditional fincas to modern, minimalist newly built villas, elegant townhouses and many delightful apartment buildings, so whatever your taste or budget, Santa Gertrudis has the perfect option for everyone.
